Customer Reviews

Best you can buy and same quality since 1975.I'm 39 and have had back trouble since I'm 16. I threw my back out worse than ever 2 days prior to buying this and was using a microwaveable heating pad that would take 5 minutes to get hot enough and then last 30-45 minutes before cooling to the point of being to be reheated. I also had 2 different cheap electric heating pads that were utterly useless. They simply don't even get hot - luke warm at best.My grandfather had back surgery in 1975 and was prescribed one of these by his doctor. I borrowed it from him (it still works like new 44 years later!) and was on amazon buying 2 of these (for myself and my mother) 10 minutes after my grandparents were kind enough to drop it off for me.These get hot enough to burn your skin if you want and the hold down rocker switch (I believe) allows Thermophore to circumvent the low heat regulations of the lo/med/hi style pads. My new one gets just as hot as theirs from 1975 and it is glorious! I couldn't walk or stand up to relieve myself before this thing came into my life, and now, I can at least move around and feel I'm getting better. My grandfather thinks they paid $75 for their 13" x 13" pad in 1975 and these are $61 shipped for one twice the size. I was concerned that the wishing would be much lower since that's what happens with quality products over time. Nope, the design is literally exactly the same, with the exception of the switch/lever being a bit better on the new one.If you need to have a heating pad, bite the bullet and buy one of these. It's the ONLY real medical grade heating pad you can buy and the best on the market. Also, don't overlook the "moist" heat provided by the felt/fleece sleeve/cover. Dry heat doesn't do the job. It's rare I leave reviews, but this changed my life after a terrible couple days. I'd hug the owner if he was here. 5Gets heat to deep muscle tissue. Dead man switch keeps you from getting burned.I have spinal cord injuries and use a heating pad on a daily basis. Since finding these, many yrs ago now, Iwon't use any other kind. I love the size; it covers my entire back. It draws moisture out of the air so you'regetting moist heat which works better. When I was first injured, I used heating pads with the push buttonto turn them on. Inevitably, I'd fall asleep laying on the heat and burn my back, sometimes to the point ofblistering it. The dead-man switch on this heating pad prevents that from ever happening. If you're holdingthe switch down as you fall asleep, your muscles will relax and even if you only release the switch a little,it's enough to turn the heat off. It comes with a washable, soft flannel cover. I've found that they last for afew years with multiple times a day use if you're careful not to bend or twist the cord a lot and thus breakthe wires inside-- but that goes with all things electrical. Also don't grab it by the cord or you could dislocatethe connection to the internal heating elements. I did that one time. However, I guessed what I'd done andwas able to push it back in place. It began working again so I must have.(?) Now I'm just carefulnot to grab it by the cord. The heavier weight helps to hold it in place and get the heat deep into muscletissue. It heats up quickly and you can feel the muscles begin to relax within a minute or two. It stays hotfor quite a while. If you keep the switch depressed, it can get very hot. I heat it up to the temp. I want, then release the switch. A little later if it's cooled down and I want more heat, I simply depress the switchagain. I have complete control. I get the remedy I seek without the danger of getting burned because, although they tell not to lay on it, I do. I've never tested the warranty so I can't speak to the person whocomplained about their customer service. I've always felt I'd gotten my money's worth out of one of thesebefore it died. These are, in my opinion, the best heating pads on the market. For those who complainabout the switch, they do make heating pads with the push button style. 5Best Heating Pad on the MarketThis is my first 5-star review of a product which has worn out, on the occasion of my buying a new one. After 7 full years of just-about daily use, my first Thermophore Heat Heat Pack died of old age and that is OK with me! Here's why. For quite some time, it has been my experience that, even supposedly high-end products either don't work as advertised to fail prematurely. On this occasion, I am glad to say I believe I got my money's worth. This is far-and-away the best heating pad on the market. Nothing compares. It is rugged, effective and safe. A word on safety: the switch is a "dead man" switch. That is, absent you holding it in the "on" position, it turns off. It is designed to prevent burns by requiring the user to hold it on for heat. Releasing the switch turns off the heat. Because it is hot enough to be effective, burns would surely result were one to tape or velcro (as some have suggested) the switch in the "on" position and fall asleep in contact with the pad. It is the design of this switch which allows this pad to deliver it high and effective heat. It would be foolish to misuse this excellent product in that way. 5Amazing Heating PadI have had this pad for 20 years. Really, 20 actual years. I finally shorted out the cord because of how I bent it. Picked up a Sunbeam heating pad at CVS that was slow to heat and stupid expensive. Got one at Walmart of a better quality...or so I thought. They're cheesy and they crinkle and are generally unpleasant. The only thing that will replace a Thermophore is a new Thermophore. The weight is important so the pad drapes over a limb or a back. The cheap ones are too light-weight, so barely make contact with the skin. I chose the dead-man's switch (momentary switch) for safety. When you let go of the switch, the pad turns off. It shouldn't be on if you aren't awake or able to control it. The pad heats very rapidly and gets HOT. The manual says not to lie or sit on it which is probably a CYA for the company. I do--but if someone is elderly or disabled, burns would be certain. 5Hold down switch is superior to other modelsThis is at least my fourth thermaphore heating pad. (Over a period of 15 or so years). I seriously abuse them and each old one owes me nothing. I lay on them, wrap them around and around, it falls off the bed, I get up, I'm standing on it. Can take some serious use considering I'm a chronic pain patient. Heats up enough to fry pancakes, (You chronic pain sufferers get it), personally, I have 2 working thermaphore right now. I prefer the hand held switch. It's so easy to keep in your hand all night, press the switch when you're in pain. It immediately heats up. Release and it starts to cool off. Want constant heat? I stick the switch under my thigh, but you could use a hair clip or twist tie. This one is the best, and surprisingly one of the cheaper. The one with low, medium, high switch is my backup, purchased by my error when I thought I was buying this model. 5moist-heat combo helps ease neck and back pain!LOVE this item!!! They used to be distributed by the VA Hosp. on the other coast, but not at my present provider, so...bought my own here. It's a bit larger so, even better. I don't mind the cost, it's so worth it! This heating pad exudes a moist type of heat that relaxes my always-spasming back & neck (or mid-back) muscles. If I can ease the spasms, I can (ideally) prevent knots from forming quickly, causing almost immediate nerve reactions in related areas (headache, shoulder, neck, arm, palm, mid-& lower-back, etc.) &, therefore, nerves within those areas. The moist-heat combo helps so much. 5They seem to be making these cheaply now.Quality of Thermophore is sadly declining. My second thermophore, which I loved, stopped working after 13 years or so. That was a good investment. i loved it. I had the style where you have to hold down the lever to keep the heat on. Not a problem. I ordered the MaxHEAT model, with the temp settings and the auto turn off. Thought it would be more convenient than the lever style. I don't know if the company is making all of their pads more cheaply, or its this MaxHeat model...BUT, there was barely any moistness to the heat which of course is necessary. And the pad did not have the weight of my last two pads. I liked the weight of the old pad to help give a deeper heat experience and mold to body shape. This pad basically floated stiffly on top of my body. Just overall cheap. Felt like someone trying to make a cheap knock-off of what was once a great heating pad - but unfortunately it was THE Thermophore company! I returned it. I hope to find something out there that is as good as these moist-heat pads used to be. 1Safe way to relax & get 20 minutes of moist heat without having to hold down the on switch the entire timel.Works well and provides timed moist heat without the need for wetting a piece of material to put inside a traditional heating pad trying to do the same job. The covering is extremely soft and it envelops you with soft but substantial moist heat. The 20 minute "pause" setting unlike the usual thermophore doesn't need to be held while i]]n use so it's easier to relax while using this model. The heat turns off after 20 minutes which is usually the prescribed amount of time to alternate between heat and ice application. Before this model came out you had hold a switch down to keep the heat on but if you managed rig it to do so and fell asleep with it on it could easily burn you. The new unit only stays on 20 minutes at a time so you can relax and enjoy the heat in safely. 5This is NOT the automatic timer - you must HOLD the button down the entire time.Very disappointed - especially since I cannot return this item. There is no information on this product that states it does not have an automatic timer. I bought this for a friend as a birthday gift and when she received it found it was not like mine which has an automatic timer. I had no idea there was a pad out there without an auto timer. This should be CLEARLY STATED in the product information. Will not buy again. 1Worth every dime!I cannot say enough great things about this heating pad. I have RSD and have continuous pain in my arm. This heating pad is the only thing that works. It gets super hot and you can control the heat. Don't want it that hot? Then simply let go of the switch when it's hot enough. It hold its heat fir quite awhile (~20 minutes) then you simply press again when you want it hot again. It has a moist heat pad so that the heat goes deeper than other dry heat pads. I love this! It's extra long too! I use it around my neck and over arm. Pretty much forms to your body. Love this! I've used one of these for at least ten years now. And I use it all the time, every day. To tell you the truth, it baffles me as to why this is not carried in stock in stores. Anyone with chronic pain or even a sudden onset/injury of back or whatever would definitely pay this type of money for something that helps them feel better. And it's not that much more than some of those crappy plastic covered ones. And this is soooo much better! Worth every dime! In my opinion. 5
