It's ok. Not worth trying again unless I can get a fresher bag.The decaf is ok. Just doesn't seem to have much complexity. The bag I received was over 4 months old. Which honestly with all the options out there I would rather get something that is much fresher. I would even be open to ordering it from them directly to insure a newer bag, but they don't seem to have that option. Might give it a chance again if I can find a fresher bag, if I happen to run into it in a local store. Otherwise, I'll pass.In my search for a good decaf a couple tips..1. I think most decafs you need to add a little extra to each cup or you'll think it's watery. Decafs just seems to be a little lacking in comparison to the regular version of the same coffee. So if you are going 16-18g a cup, probably would skip up to 18g-20g. 2. If you coffee is overly acidic you are probably over extracting, it's not always the coffee. Go with a coarser grind or bring down the water temp a bit as a test.Edit Update: Reduced to 1 star. I ended up throwing away about half the bag. Wasn't worth it and I don't think it was a bad bag. Just not very good. Better and fresher options out there1If you love a dark roast that doesn't taste burned and is as flavorful as a caffeinated coffee, this is it.I recently switched from drinking mostly caffeinated to drinking mostly decaffeinated coffee. I wanted a coffee that was decaffeinated using the Swiss Water Process and not by using chemicals. I also love a dark roast but not a dark roast that tastes like it was burned as is the case with one national chain. Kicking Horse definitely filled the bill. This is delicious coffee that is as good as any caffeinated coffee, minus the buzz. Highly recommend it if you like a dark roast. I bought two other decaf coffees at the same time. One was No Fun Jo which was definitely too light a roast for me. I found it bland. The other one was Stone Street. It was fuller flavored with a definite earthy flavor. I'm still not sure how I feel about Stone Street. Definitely more flavorful than No Fun Jo but you have to like an earthy flavor to enjoy it. It still might grow on me.5Tastes amazingDefinitely worth it. I like how this is an organic brand. I ve been getting decaf coffee from Starbucks but that s not organic. I m glad I found an organic brand of coffee that is decaf. I m trying to stay away from caffeine because it increases my anxiety levels. This has a really nice taste end it smells so good. I m so glad that I found this. I could be pretty picky about how my coffee tastes, so the fact that I like this is perfect. I m going to be having this every morning.5Rock in this coffee almost broke my grinder!This coffee is good, and I've ordered quite a bit of it, but there was a rock in my latest bag that almost broke my grinder. Fortunately, it's a hand grinder which stopped immediately (and hopefully didn't ruin the burrs). I had to empty out the coffee beans, inspect them and gradually put them back. I finally found the culprit, a small rock that looked like a mutated coffee bean. The beans in this bag were not of uniform size, some were very small so I see how a rock could slip in and not be seen. Thank goodness I wasn't using some expensive electric grinder, that could have been tragic. I've sent the rock and the bag it came in back to the company to alert them to the issue. Hopefully, it's something they'll fix because the coffee is otherwise really good.5MehA long time coffee drinker, I switched to decaf over a year ago and have been on the lookout for good beans that are inexpensive or are worth the cost. My cheap but good enough coffee is Costco's ground Columbian decaf in the huge 3lb can with the green lid. It's usually marked with a 2 year best buy date and is $3-4/lb. So I generally expect beans I grind myself to taste better, especially if they cost more and I am happy to spend $20 or more a lb for good fresh roasted beans. I wanted to love this coffee especially because I can subscribe and save to it, but it's just meh. It's not bad, but not good either. I drink good beans black, but usually prefer whole milk in coffee and only use sugar now on a rare occasion or if the coffee is bad and I'm out somewhere and don't have a better choice. Black this coffee is weak and with milk weaker, I have to wonder if all the flavor was lost in the decaffeinating process. As for freshness, I bought it in January and it was stamped best by September of this year. Normally vacuum packed beans have a 2 year shelf life, but in the absence of a roast date I have to wonder how long and in what temperature conditions these were sitting around in before I got them. I may out of curiosity try them again, but I can't really see making these a regular coffee buy when I can get better ground coffee cheaper or much better whole beans that are actually worth the extra cost.3More flavor without caffeine. Hooray!I am very sensitive to caffeine. Even "decaf" coffee has too much caffeine for me. I love coffee, but have been avoiding it for many years. I discovered that the Swiss Water Process of decaffeination renders a high quality cup of coffee that is 99.9% caffeine-free and without any chemicals. The 99.9% caffeine-free claim must be true because I can drink 2 very strong cups in a row and not feel any stimulation. The Kicking Horse organic coffee is even healthier than most because it contains no pesticides. It is dark, and my research indicates that dark beans have less acid in them. My husband does not need to be as careful about caffeine as I do, but he drinks it with me because he enjoys the flavor. I'm delighted that I can enjoy drinking coffee again!5Great decaf especially if you're sensitive to acidI've been drinking Peet's Major Dickason's Blend decaf for a few years, and found it quite tasty for a decaf, but as of this morning, Kicking Horse 454 Horse Power decaf is my fave. How did I decide to step up to the Horse? Science! Well, kitchen science, anyway.I ran a taste test today, comparing Major Dickason and Kicking Horse. First, I ground the Horse beans in a burr mill to the same grind as the Peet's beans. Then I made the two test cups of coffee simultaneously with the pour-over method using Hario cones and Hario unbleached filters, with no filter rinsing.For each cup I used 54 grams of coffee and 190 grams of water. Nothing magic about these numbers - I like my coffee pretty strong, and the amounts looked about right for my 8-ounce test cups. I alternated the pouring between both cups which were on scales to even out the water between them.I don't use cream or sugar in my coffee, and tasted both coffees black, sipping water between tastes. I even used identical cups marked underneath to remove some bias. I noticed right away that one coffee was slightly sour/acidic, and the other was not. The acidic one had some sweet notes that were overshadowed by the acidity. The other coffee had a slightly bitter dominant taste, but was more complex and balanced. The coffees tasted similar to me, but the balanced on the clear winner, especially since it was low in acidity. I do like a little bitter kick, but not acidity.My winner turned out to be the Kicking Horse, to my surprise. I then put a few grains of baking soda in the Peet's to neutralize most of the acid, but the resulting flavor was pretty dull in comparison to the 454 Horse Power. So that's the story of how I got a new favorite decaf coffee.5Brute force coffeeAs a forward, my coffee preference is a dark roast Pacific, Arabian, or African coffee. Being reduced to drinking decaf, the search for a decaf organic coffee from any of those regions has been a frustrating one.This Kicking Horse dark roast is over-roasted. The brute force, smoked flavor overshadows any other notes that might have been in these beans. If you like that sort of thing in your morning coffee than you will enjoy drinking this. To use it up I ve been blending it with another brand of organic decaf that is on the other, insipid end of the spectrum.This morning I broke down and had a cup of my spouse s dark roast Kenyan coffee from Peet s and was reminded of what a glorious cup of coffee tastes like. As I went back to my disappointing cup of insipid+over-roasted coffee I was compelled to leave this review.My search for an organic, dark roast decaf with some complex flavor continues.3Good Decaf Whole Bean CoffeeI'm a skeptic when it comes to decaf coffee. I never would have considered it years ago, but as I've gotten a little older I don't seem to have the same resilience to caffeine that I once did.If you're like me, your opinion of decaf coffee is the ground up chemical-tasting stuff your parents drank after dinner. But Kicking Horse uses the Swiss Water method of decaffeinating their beans. And, true to the things you'll read about the method, there's no chemical taste.The beans looked pretty good in the bag, not oily like I'm used to seeing with my favorite french roasts but not bad. The aroma was pleasant too.After grinding and making my first cup I was not overwhelmed by the flavor, but it was far from bad. Missing a lot of the chocolate I typically get with the darker roasts but still a decent cup of coffee without the caffeine. I've started to mix this half-and-half with my regular blend and the results have been pretty good.If rating on flavor alone I'd probably give 3 stars. But considering how bad some whole bean decaf coffee I've had was, and knowing how absolutely delicious Kicking Horse caffeinated coffee is, I have to give this 4 stars with the belief that this is as good as dark roast whole bean coffee gets.4Amazing!!This is just a great find! I love super dark rich coffee and this nails it on the head.. super high quality and at a great price for organic Swiss process. I can t say enough about this coffee. I will tell you it s very hard to please me with the strength and roast style but this coffee is delicious. I get the decaf and the grizzly claw caffeinated. It s also organic kosher fair trade .....5
