Customer Reviews

Not bad but lots of dustThis is an okay genmaicha...the smell is a rich, heavenly roasted rice smell (which actually kind of backfires for my purposes because I wanted a dinner drink that could help satiate me, but this smells so savory that it makes me hungrier!). The leaves are dark and look like good quality, but there is a lot of dust even at the top of the canister. When I made a pot the whole bottom was layered in sediment, and my filter is pretty fine. It also was a bit weak when made with their recommendations (one level teaspoon per 8 ounces of water), but overall a good flavor. It's a decent tea and I think the price is good for the amount you get, but I'll be looking elsewhere when it's time to restock.3Not the same taste as their EG tea bagsAfter reading about micro-plastics from tea bags and also reviewing this company s post on their bags, I decided to buy their loose leaf Earl Grey, and I expected the taste to be similar if not identical. As it turns out, the taste is significantly different than the bags; not bad, but not at all like the bergamot infused flavor from the Earl Grey tea bags. I d have to guess that there is almost no bergamot in the loose leaf mix. Also, the loose leaf offers a much darker tea, likely from the abundance of oolong in the blend. So, it s a good taste but NOT at all like the flavor I was used to from their Earl Grey teabags.3Deliecious tea without breaking the bank!Delicious!!Great quality and flavor at a reasonable price...I would note that their brewing instructions could be updated a bit.. This tea will yield several infusions. Don't steep the first infusion for longer than about a minute (tin says 3 to 5 mins), you can then steep a second time for a little longer, and so on. Adjust brew time to taste.5Delicious with milk and sugar. Or plain!Aside from Hot Cinnamon Spice, this is one of Harney & Son's most popular teas, and easily my favorite of all time. Stronger than English Breakfast, but not as strong as Scottish Morn, it's the tea I go to when skipping coffee for the day. It's a bit malty, and goes great with a full on Irish breakfast of boxty drenched in butter and scallions. I don't usually sweeten my teas, but with this I'll put about 1/4-1/2 tbsp sugar (for a 3 cup batch) and a few drops of milk. If tea could taste like dessert, this is it.5Mostly SedimentMostly dust instead of tea leaf. This is the first time that I have received so poor a tea from Harney & Sons! I have several of their teas and this tea, Irish Breakfast, is unusable; the tea has a strange flavour and you cannot strain it- it gives you a cup of fine sediment. Awful! I will be returning.1Nicely Nutty, but the Green Tea is a Bit BitterThis was my first genmaicha. I really enjoy teas with a nutty flavor component--like some oolongs--as a nice change of pace from regular black tea.Pros:- A very nice toasted, nutty flavor. The nutty flavor is much more pronounced than in oolongs like The Tao of Tea Wuyi Oolong Tea.- A toasted, nutty fragrance as well. In my opinion, the toasted rice comes through a lot stronger on the nose than the green tea. That's a nice change from traditional green and black teas.- Holds up well to a couple steepings in a Teavana Perfect Tea Ball. The second steeping, of course, requires a bit more time to attain the same strength.- I think there's a proper ratio between the amount of toasted rice and green tea leaves.Cons:- The green tea itself is a bit bitter for my tastes.- For those who like a perfectly pure cup of tea, the toasted rice, of course, turns to mush after steeping for awhile, so a second steeping can leave some sediment in the cup. I happen to like it because it transfers that nutty flavor to the brew.I wouldn't be afraid to purchase this again, but I think I'm going to try another variety first to see if I can get one with green tea that's not as bitter.Edit: I purchased and started drinking Davidson's Tea Bulk, Genmaicha, 16-Ounce Bag. The quality and taste are just as good if not better (less bitter) than the Harney & Sons variety. At twice the quantity for the same price, I'll stick with the Davidson's product from here forward.4Found it flat and weak even with double the amount of teaMy first time trying this seeing all the great reviews. First, not impressed that there was no seal between the tea and the cover so when I pulled up the tin cover I spilled a bunch of tea on the floor. I also wonder how fresh it can be without the seal. I found it weak and flat in flavor, even when I doubled the amount of tea. I have been a tea drinker all my life and this does not meet the description of stronger and more robust than English Breakfast tea. I ordered the Earl Grey and English Breakfast tea too. Lower expectations now. :(3It's just 'meh'I was very excited to find a raspberry loose leaf tea and brewed some within minutes of it being delivered. Boy, what a let down. The tea smells wonderful and has a beautiful color, but it has a very strong peppermint flavor with a mild raspberry aftertaste. Peppermint is the last ingredient on the list so I assumed it would be faint but it isn't, it's dominant. I really don't like it. I brought it into work, set it in the break room and labeled it 'free to a good home'.2Best genmaicha I have had.I am a foodie and don't hesitate to buy gourmet stuff and go to "tea houses". I've been to tea houses in San Francisco and Santa Fe. I'm also asian and go to asian grocery stores. I now live in a small town and don't have access to those places anymore so I decided too order this. Best genmaicha I have ever had. I have had my tea connoisseur asian friends try it too and they agree it is a very lovely tea. I have liked every tea except for the green tea and coconut one that I have tried from this company.5I like the brisk tannic taste I get across my tongue ...Harney &Sons Irish breakfast loose leaf tea: I like the brisk tannic taste I get across my tongue as soon as I take a sip, and I like the dark, almost dull-metal, not-quite-bitter flavor that I find comforting. And that s what ultimately matters. Also, with this particular tea there s something biochemically that clicks with my system so that the caffeine effect is creative, optimistic and productive energy, rather than the anxious energy of coffee. But that s just me.That being said, this large tin contains dusty tiny granules of tea leaf, so if you care about seeing actual full tea leaves, this is not for you.4
