Color of bean is saying Dark roast with a harsh taste, not medium roast.I have been using Eight O'Clock medium roast in caffeinated and was looking for a similar in decaf. I took a comparison picture of this decaf on the right side, the dark bean, with my go to Eight O'Clock 100% Colombian Peaks Medium Roast. You can easily see the decaf medium is much darker, looks dark roast to me and has a much harsher/stronger taste. I wish I could send it back!1Not What I ordered, but it has a good flavor for Hot Brewed coffee onlyI ordered whole bean coffee, and received ground in a bag that had a small razor knife cut in the bottom of the 8 O'Clock Coffee bag. I contacted Amazon, and the refund went smoothly, but they didn't require that I return the ground coffee.Overall, this is my favorite 'supermarket coffee', but like many supermarket brands, the dark roasts are really medium, and the medium are actually light roast. I have no idea what the light roast versions taste like!. I bought this to experiment with Cold Brew coffee. Knowing that it takes a LOT of coffee to make a decent amount of CB concentrate, I thought I'd buy a good cheap brand that I like.I made a batch with 8 O'Clock (Ground, what was I going to do with it?) and a batch with Allegro Blue Nile Whole bean (Medium Roast). In both cases, the cold brewed coffee had less of an acidic coffee "Bite" to it, However, the 8 O'clock version was much less flavorful than the (much more expensive) Allegro coffee.I suspect that the 'optimistic' branding of the 8 O'Clock coffee as 'medium roast' was to blame. It was almost 'medium roast' and it is close enough that the hot brew method with it's greater 'bite' hides it well, but that the cold brew can't hide the shorter, slightly lighter roasting time. The pre-ground nature of the coffee may have also played a part in this.It would be interesting to see if the 8 O'Clock dark roast flavors would be more suitable for cold brew. When I'm in the mood for experimenting, I will try it out. But for now, I can not recommend the 8 O'Clock Columbian, medium roast for cold brew. However it does make a pleasant cup of hot brew!4disappointingI have been a big fan of the original for a long time. I had tried another brands French roast and was superbly impressed with the coffee. I bought large bags of both the Italian and French roast 8 oclock thinking they would be great, WRONG. Disappointed with both French roast. As soon as you open the bag it has strong burnt carbon aroma. You look at the French Roast beans and you can tell it is a mixture of two different roasts one dart the other medium. When brewed the carbon carried strongly into the coffee and not nearly as good as others French roasts. Sticking to the original roast. For French roast I will go with another brand.1Old Label But Great!Over the last couple of years I've been trying and evaluating both regular and decaf whole bean coffee. About 3/4 has been regular whole bean. A few of those were fairly exotic.I have also tested 6 whole bean decaf and 1 ground decaf in that time, giving each coffee an extended taste of at least a few weeks. Of the 7 total decaf coffees tested, 1 was supermarket quality (ground), one was a modest but fairly well reviewed whole bean, and the other 5 were high rated, more expensive varieties. 3 of these 5 were fine. One was completely without character. And then there was this Eight O'Clock, which is very reasonably priced...so low, that it shouldn't be much of a "flavor experience."Wrong!None of the other whole bean decaf coffees I tasted were as nearly good, and only one was even in the same universe with this one. I'm done. This is my late-in-the-day decaf coffee forever.5It could be just a thin sliver betterTim Horton was like a monster deal. Hardly could tell the difference in sophistication coffee by comparison. ... EIGHT O' was not a disappointment at all but , fresh as it was seemed a notch down in complexity compared to Tim Horton's beans when TH is shipped at it very best ( normally consistent tho) . I just ordered EIGHT O' today, just now again because I thought that Tim Horton would ruin my Christmas by sending a stale bag. But I think Amazon wants me to try their brand which I will do soon some day. But with Organic Heavy Whipping Cream and Stevia drops, even dish-water is tasty.4Cheapie but goodieI have drank almost nothing but Eight Oclock Columbian for probably 5 years now. One of the cheapest big brand coffees, but also one of the best. Like most Columbian mountain grown coffee, this one is very smooth, and very forgiving of poor grinding or brewing. Nice aroma when brewed with my superautomatic DeLonghi Magnifica. Decent crema. Medium roast, which I prefer for espresso, never tastes burnt. Make it as strong as you like, always gentle on the palate and nose. I have used this bean for pourover, french press, moka, biggin, and old timey percolator coffee. Only disappointment was in the pourover, where it just didn't pack much punch in the brew, but otherwise was pretty decent, very drinkable. The beans grind well in any grinder I have tried, including the grinder in my DeLonghi Magnificas. Don't spend crazy money on exotic "cat shit" coffees. Or overpriced artisan roasts. This one will do ya.5Excellent robust hardy flavorIt is hard to find a coffee that is not fruity flavored nowadays. After trying numerous coffees looking for a robust nutty flavor, this Dark Italian Espresso ended my search. My grocery store stopped selling it, so I am grateful that I can obtain it via Amazon. Every morning I look forward to a hot mug of this coffee.5Smooth and mild; Not bitter or burnt tasting. Very refreshing!My grandfather used to drink this (I'm pretty sure it was not decaf though). I don't like most coffee because I can't stand that bitter or burnt taste. I especially cannot stand Starbucks or other bold coffee. However, I absolutely LOVE the Eight O'Clock brand coffee!So smooth, absolutely not bitter. It also has a very bright, not burnt flavor. It's so refreshing! I'm only allowed to have decaf (doctor's orders) so I tried several before finally finding this one that I like.My wife is a Starbucks addict (not kidding, she really is addicted) and we decided for her health, it was time to ween her off of that stuff. She was very skeptical of 'my coffee' and was reluctant to try it. Once she did try Eight O'Clock decaf, she was very enthusiastic and asked me to order more. That says a LOT coming from Mrs. Coffee Snob herself.5Our favoriteMy wife and I are coffee aficionados, and have traveled extensively throughout the US, Europe, the MIddle East and Far East. I think the best brewed coffee can be found in Turkey, but it might be a bit strong for the average coffee drinker. Jacobs coffee, blended in Germany, is the best we have found but it's difficult to get in the US. Certain Starbucks blends coming from East Africa is excellent. But after trying many, many blends we always come back to Eight O'Clock, which has been around forever. We have an automatic coffee machine set to strong, with grind set to coarse. It's a joy to start off the day with this stuff.5I love Eight O'clock coffee and have been buying it in ...I love Eight O'clock coffee and have been buying it in a 42 oz vacuum sealed package for $17.43 most recently ($0.415/oz). I decided to try buying two 24 oz packages at $7.72, a significant savings ($0.322/oz). This arrived with the vacuum seal broken for both bags, although the package was sealed at the top. No vacuum. I tried making a cup and it didn't taste the same to me, although the beans look very similar visually. When I went back to Amazon to investigate, I found the price for the exact same thing I'd ordered for $7.72 was now $11.70 for a 24 oz bag ($0.488/oz), not $7.72 ($0.322/oz).I am rating the previous purchase of the 42 oz bag of "the Original" at 5 stars, but this one at 2 stars. Because the bags were not vacuum sealed (although they had that seal capability on the side of the packages). Regardless of whether the price is $7.72 or $11.70 / 24 oz package next time I go to order, I won't buy this product because I don't trust what I'm getting. Even though what I received doesn't taste the same to me, I guess I'll use it, but I won't be buying this again. Maybe I'll stick with the supermarket where I can make sure the package is vacuum sealed.=======================================Now that I've started using it out of the vacuum sealed bags --WE-- sealed it in after received it without vacuum packaging, I dropping my rating to "1 STAR". Why? Because transitioning from the 42 ounce, vacuum sealed package we bought previously from Amazon, these coffee beans, ground exactly the same way, taste very acidy, oxidized, and on the verge of being rancid. IF YOU LOVE EIGHT O'CLOCK COFFEE BEANS, DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. If you do, and if it arrives without vacuum sealing (as I should have realized from the photo), send it back. The acid after-taste is really bad.Now I'm stuck working through two bags of this stuff after trying to save a few cents per ounce. NEVER AGAIN!1
