Drying, white cast, pilling sunscreen As a fair-skinned redhead with a history of skin cancer, I wear sunscreen every day--summer and winter, rain or shine. I have used many brands of physical sunscreens. This is the worst I have ever used. To say it leaves a white cast is an understatement (remember my skin is very white to start with). It does not blend at all. If I attempt to massage it in, it starts to pill badly. Touching my face causes it to pill. Worst of all it is desiccating. I have normal skin. I have never had a product dry out my skin to this extent. I had to wash it off and copiously apply moisturizer after a few hours. I tried it twice and tossed it. 1Patchy and Leaves Residue on Skin I wish I would have tested this sunscreen before the return window closed. I used this sunscreen twice and I hate it. The first time I used the sunscreen after my eye cream and face cream routine and it left residue that looked like dry patches all over my face. I had pieces of the lotion coming off my face, and it was not easy to just wipe it away. The second time I used the lotion on it's own to see if it works better on it's own. I was wrong. It did the exact same thing leaving white residue and patches that continued to come off that morning. I do not recommend this lotion and I am going back to using Eucerin SPF 30. 1Great lightweight and conscience happy sunscreen I spent hours pouring over ingredients in myriad "natural" "healthy" and "organic" sunscreens, checking ingredients and being disappointed in what a lot of products claimed vs. what their actual ingredients are. I found a few options after much investigation and finally decided to try this sunscreen mostly because there were so few reviews that complained about it's texture. This is a great sunscreen for your face. It is lightweight, fragrance free, and also works well under make up (I had no issue with applying a full serum foundation over top of it with primer) and doesn't cost $50. Best of all I don't have to worry about any of the ingredients. My boyfriend, who is a pain in the neck to convince to put sunscreen on his face, actually will use this. If anything, when applying, less is more. Thanks derma e! 5Works for me!I started using this about a week ago. I thought it sounded great, due to limited ingredients. My skin breaks out very easy, especially from sunscreens. It is slightly hard to spread, but once you get it on, it does set. You need to just give it a minute. I use mineral powder foundation, which I apply directly over this once it sets, and I have experienced no streaks or patches. My skin has had no issues with this product. In fact, I think the zinc has helped. My face looks great! As far as chalkiness, I am very fair-skinned, so I do not get a white cast. I will continue to buy this as long as my face continues to like it.5Nothing like the Antioxidant Natural Sunscreen. Disappointing. I bought this sunscreen thinking it was the Derma E "Antioxidant Natural Sunscreen" just slightly re-branded. Boy was I wrong. The "Antioxidant Natural Sunscreen" was my holy grail sunscreen because it went on very matte and I have oily skin. It was the only reasonably priced sunscreen I've ever found that didn't make my face look and/or feel like I smeared vegetable oil all over it, and didn't make me break out. This "Natural Mineral Sunscreen" has a noticeably more tacky, almost slimy texture and makes my face look shiny and oily. The smell is also much stronger. The "Antioxidant Natural Sunscreen" would leave a slight white cast if you didn't rub it in well enough (due to the zinc), so I'm used to spending a little longer to really rub in my sunscreen. I was treating this sunscreen the same way, partially in the hopes that if I rubbed it in well enough it would start to mattify, but the strangest thing happened... It started to peel off??? (see picture) It literally looked like I was rubbing off dead skin or something, but I had just used an exfoliating face cleanser so that can't be what it was. I've never ever had that happen with a sunscreen before. That's what clued me in that this is probably not the same as my tried and true "Antioxidant Natural Sunscreen". I found the ingredients to compare them just to be sure I wasn't imagining the difference or that I got a bad batch or something, and they're totally different ingredients:Antioxidant Natural SunscreenActive Ingredient: Zinc Oxide 16%Inactive Ingredients: Purified Water (Aqua), Capric/Caprylic Triglyceride, Propanediol, Glycerin, Methylcellulose, Glyceryl Stearate, Cetyl Alcohol, Organic Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract* (1%), Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C, Stay-C 50), Decyl Glucoside, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin.Natural Mineral SunscreenActive Ingredient: Zinc Oxide 20%Inactive Ingredients: Purified Water, Coco-Caprylate (Coconut Derived), Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Lauryl Glucoside (Plant Derived), Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Glycerin (Vegetable Derived), Microcrystalline Cellulose (Plant Derived), Cellulose Gum (Plant Derived), Organic Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract*, Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C), Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Phytic Acid, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Xanthan Gum, Benzyl Alcohol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Tocopherol.Derma E doesn't even have the "Antioxidant Natural Sunscreen" on their website anymore, only this "Natural Mineral Sunscreen", so they've most likely discontinued it which is super, suuuper disappointing. I'm going to keep using this "Natural Mineral Sunscreen" so it doesn't go to waste (as long as it doesn't break me out) but I guess I'll be on the hunt for a new sunscreen now with similar properties of the old Derma E "Antioxidant Natural Sunscreen". 2This sunscreen almost immediately falls off your skin in chunks I would not suggest buying this again. I read about the ingredients and it seems like a great idea but the moment you start rubbing it onto your skin it starts becoming a paste that you skin does not absorb whatsoever, It then turns into little particles that just stick to your skin, It basically makes your skin look as if its peeling off. Not sure if after that process it is even working because it seems like it all just falls off after the application. Totally not worth it. 1Natural SPF Standoff! Derma E loses! I am a 33 year old female, with adult acne prone skin. I compared two of the leading natural facial SPFs. Juice Beauty SPF 30 and Derma E SPF 30. Both are 2 oz containers using zinc as the only sun screen, both are oil free. As of the time of this review derma e Antioxidant Natural Sunscreen SPF 30 Oil-Free Face Lotion with Vitamin C and Green Tea 2 oz is available on Amazon as an add on for $8.83, while the Juice Beauty SPF is $29. So there is a significant difference in price.I wore the Derma E on the left side of my face and the Juice Beauty on the right side of my face for several weeks in order to get a good comparison. Derma E feels lighter, but does not blend as well, leaving product build up and pilling on the skin. It also caused me to break out. On the Juice Beauty side, it feels heavy, but actually blends better! No build up or pilling, but does have a strong smell. No breakouts on the Juice Beauty side.In conclusion, Juice Beauty was a clear winner for me. I still gave Derma E 3 stars though because it is not terrible, and if your skin is not acne prone, it may work well for you. Also, if you are sensitive to smells, you may find that the Derma E is better than the Juice Beauty. However, if zinc sunscreens don't agree with you, and you're ok with something that uses chemical sunscreen, I do recommend Murad Anti Aging Moisturizer Spf30 Pa+++ For Blemish-Prone Skin 50ml/1.7oz. 3This is it. The holy grail of SPF. I thought I would never find it! So, this seems to be the miraculous ideal sunscreen I have been seeking for years: physical block without titanium dioxide, high SPF, no creepy chemicals, isn't greasy or shiny, doesn't break me out, and feels good on my skin. EVERY sunscreen breaks me out or leaves my skin feeling itchy or congested if I leave it on all day!! This one doesn't, and I have been wearing it every day for two weeks straight.Yes, it leaves a white cast which is stronger the more product you use. That is NOT the fault of the sunscreen. It's just the nature of the ingredient zinc oxide, and if you want the calming and sun-blocking benefits you just have to put up with some whiteness. I've gone out in public with the white cast a few times and it's not horrible but it does make me look more fair and gothic than usual, so instead, here's how I deal with it: I work it in fast and don't rub more than necessary. Then when it's set, I buff a bit of Colorescience Pro Sunforgettable SPF 50 Powder on top to even out the white cast. (The Colorescience powder is kind of expensive in its original dispenser but I just bought the refill and swirl it in a glass with a kabuki brush. It comes in different shades, which you can see on their website, and Amazon has reasonable prices on the refills.) The effect is natural looking and leaves no hint of white cast, and provides me with a LOT of sun protection -- 50 SPF layered on top of 30 SPF! And all that while not irritating my skin or giving me acne? I consider it a miracle.Another sunscreen hack I've been doing that is working well for me is to add a small squirt of moisturizer and mix in my fingers just before applying, which helps it slip a bit better and have a little bit of moisturizing factor -- I've been using a squirt of Hyalogic Episilk PHA hyaluronic acid serum but I bet you could use any moisturizer you like -- and then I do the powder step.Anyway, if, like me, you have tried everything and thought that you would never find a sunscreen with natural ingredients that felt good on your skin and didn't make you look greasy and ridiculous, give this one a try. 5100% IneffectiveSunscreen was 100% ineffective. This was the only time in my life that I have ever burned after applying sunscreen. Both my husband and I were burnt within an hour. Even after reapplying, we continued to burn. Unfortunately, we didn't use it until after the 30 day return period, so I am out my $12. Very unsatisfied with this product. Service was good, as far as shipping and delivery were concerned.1cannot recommend - here's why... Generally I like Derma E products and I liked this sunscreen for about a year. I recently bought two additional tubes. They are labeled "Oil Free" which the others were not (from memory). When I apply the sunscreen from these "Oil Free" tubes, the product just pills up. It won't rub into the skin. Makes a huge mess. I don't know if this is a formulation change, if I just got two screwed up tubes, or if my skin just doesn't like it anymore. Whatever the case, I can't use it and I can't recommend it.As an alternative I tried MyChelle Coconut SPF 28, which I love.MyChelle Sunshield Coconut SPF 28, Mineral-Based Sunscreen with Zinc Oxide and Antioxidants for All Skin Types, 2.3 fl oz 1Protective but it Pills I've been using this sunscreen for 2-3 years. I've used it when I've been on beach vacations and for everyday use. The pros are that it will protect your skin and keep you from burning. It does leave a white cast and it doesn't dry down matte. It looks greasy. I wait 20 minutes and then pat it dry with a tissue paper. I then apply settimg powder and blush. If I'm out in the sun I do re-apply it. The product does pill a little. The white cast isn't noticeable if you apply less than the recommended amount which most do.I'm on a quest for the perfect face sunscreen. I've ordered 6 new ones, including 4 from Japan and Korea. I've heard they have a nicer finish. Thus far, I've used the make Prem lotion and I really like it much more than the Derma E. It doesn't pill and dries matte. I actually measure and use the recommended 1/4 teaspoon on my face. If I use 1/8 of a teaspoon it's much less white and if I use 1/16 then it blends beautifully. I have medium (lighter) skin with neutral undertones. Sephora's color tone system is 1Y 06. 3Peeling Flakey Mess; Back to the Drawing Board! I'm very upset and disappointed about with this product! I originally purchased this product because it received a rating of 1 (The best rating possible) from the Environmental Working Group. The first time I purchased the product I was so happy with it! The texture was smooth, and it didn't leave my skin overly white, as so many physical sunscreens do. I told all my friends and family that I had finally found a great healthy sunscreen that worked well under makeup, and I encouraged them to buy this product too.I was happy with my second bottle as well, but on the third bottle, I received an entirely different sunscreen product from DERMA-E. I didn't notice that it was a different type of sunscreen until I had been using it for about a week, and at that point I didn't feel that I could return it. I also desperately needed it; I use it daily to protect my skin from the harsh California sun. With the arrival of this last bottle, I'm just disgusted. This time, I did receive the correct item, but the sunblock functions completely differently. As I try to apply it to my face, it peels right off, in little sticky, flaky bits. I've tried everything: exfoliating my face first, letting the sunblock sit, trying to apply it with a little water, applying it super fast; nothing works! It is a complete waste of money because I can't trust that any is even getting on my face, and it's completely impossible to wear under makeup. So now I'm back to the drawing board. I currently have no sunblock to use, and I need to research a new brand of physical sunscreen. I'm also stuck with an almost completely full bottle that I have no interest in using. I am guessing I received a defective product, but after two bad experiences, I'm not willing to take the risk of wasting anymore money on this product. On to the next! 1
