Heel-Savers!I have Danner boots that I wear when out hiking. They are somewhat heavier than hi-tech hiking boots but they are much sturdier, provide greater ankle support (essential when carrying 90lb+ backpacks across rough terrain) and I can wade through 6 inches of water with impunity. The drawback is that no sooner have I broken in the boots so that they fit my feet perfectly and I can walk 20+ miles without any chafing or rubbing than... the heels begin to wear down. Without heel protectors, the boots become useless after only about 100 miles. But with heel protectors I can get at least 300 miles of wear out of the boots before the rest of the sole becomes eroded. The only drawback with these nylon heel plates is that they wear pretty rapidly. Pavement or hard surfaces will ablate them after as little as 15 miles, whereas on dirt I can get around 25 miles of use from them. Steel heel protectors would of course not have this problem but they'd be very noisy on hard surfaces and not be quite as easy to use on slick surfaces. So all in all the nylon heel protectors are a good compromise. 4Perfect for men's large heels, such as in bootsThe smaller heels curve too acutely and don't cover the larger heels. The trick is to let the heel wear down just enough to use the heel plates. Too little wear down, and they will elevate the heel. Just enough and they will level out the worn out corner. These will do the trick for large heels such as in winter wear. 5didn't hold upthese heel plates from this seller were very inferior to other heel plates that I've tried. They wore out in a little over a week, and the nails that were supplied did not hold the plates because the nails had no ridges for holding power, they came out of the heel very easily 1Have had to use alternative glue rather than the peal ...Have had to use alternative glue rather than the peal off type that is supplied. The problem may be related to the fact that the shoes had been worn and I did not spend enough effort in cleaning and prepping the area before attaching. The nails concern me having wooden floors in our house and did no use them. Overall I'm still optimistic 4Good InvestmentEasy to install. Has strong adhesive backing and nails to ensure they remain attached. I used on my western boots and they are very durable. I expect to get good wear out of these. Very good value for protecting my shoe/boot heels. 5extend the life of your shoes/bootsthis is my first experience with heel plates. Without them the outside of the heel gets worn down which in turn puts a strain on my feet. They wear out in a few weeks and I just replace them. I can't afford to keep replacing the boots, since they have a molded sole. the one drawback, which is minor, is that sometimes the nails don't seat properly in the heel plates and if you are walking on wood floors they can leave marks on the floors. since my house has all wood floors, I take off the shoes when I walk in the house and leave them by the door. Other than that they are great. 5Boots still look and feel greatI have ruined too many pairs of boot and shoes because I wear out the outside rear of the heal and in time this will eventually make the whole boot or shoe sag. Upon the purchase of a $300 hiking boots I nailed a set of these on. 6 months (and 3 sets of cleats) the boots feel and look great. Needless to say all of my boots and shoes have them on. 5quick and easy purchase.painless, quick and easy purchase... wish they made these in 2 or 3 XL to fit the whole width of the heel... but these will serve their purpose of keeping unwanted wear down to a minimum... considering the shoe store down the street charges six bucks to apply these to one pair of shoes, I've already saved ten bucks, by nailing them to the heels of two pair of boots and a pair of saddle shoes... 5Good concept, bad executionThe nail is smooth, it doesn't have teeth or any thing to prevent it from coming loose. I installed them without glue, just 2 nails on 2 ends. It has 5 holes as if you should be putting nails on all 5. But the bag of nails doesn't look like there's enough for 5 nails per side. It works for less than 2 weeks and the left side came off entirely and I lost it. 1 week later 1 nail from right side came off. This time I see it and able to put it back. Will try with all 5 nails. So far, it protects the heel but doesn't seem to stay on for long. 2Less Would Be More.These heel plates are quite large and only suitable for men's shoes, and the heel in particular. For that purpose it's fine. But really quite big. However since these taps are so large they will not fit on the front of many shoes and not on anything except maybe a large size boot for a woman. That said, it does the trick on the heel of a large men's shoe. If the taps were smaller and available it's preferable as they would be more useful. 3
